FRANCE
Gite
Lou Coucaye - a cottage in Auvergne
I have a holiday cottage in the middle of France which is very popular with birders who find it! It is in a Natura 2000 zone, and backs on to a ZPS - special protection zone - (French equivalent of an SSSI) famous for its birds of prey; Short-toed Eagle in particular, but also harriers, kites, Goshawks as well as a range of other interesting birds. The local Bird centre "Maison des Oiseaux" of Haute Loire is 6 km away, and the local LPO run regular birding trips from there in summer. Andrew Rossiter.
Website: http://gites.gitelink.com/chazieux/gite.htm
Description: A cottage for up to six people in the Haute Loire valley in the Massif Central mountains in central France. The cottage lies in a designated European natural heritage area, and the hillside behind it is a special protection zone for birds. Watch Short-toed Eagles and kites from the terrace, or enjoy the local hiking opportunities along paths rich with birdlife. Enjoy guided birding trips with the local LPO (French equivalent of the RSPB) from their centre just a few kilometres from the cottage. You can find a list of birds found in this beautiful part of central southern France on the website.
Les Sorbiers
Our birdlife here in the Pyrenees is much specialised. The area excels in the number and variety of raptors- Bearded Vulture (ten pairs nesting locally), Golden Eagle (found on the mountain-side opposite Les Sorbiers), Booted Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, and the ever-present Griffon Vulture. The bird most enthusiasts will want to see is the elusive Wallcreeper which during the summer is seldom found below 2000m, our closest site is two hours walk from the village (we observed the birds regularly through to mid-July). The bird otherwise can only be found high on the frontier ridge at over 2500m. We can organise a day to accompany you to our most reliable site. Other species found locally of interest to British birdwatchers are Eagle Owl, Alpine Accentor, Snow Finch, Citril Finch, Capercaillie, Rock Thrush, Firecrest and we have a number of Black Woodpeckers nesting around the village. The extensive bird lists at Les Sorbiers are an invaluable aid to finding where particular species can be found and can be used with our own route guide to the local footpath network, most importantly we explain ourselves what you can expect to find and where you can find it.

ITALY

http://www.walkinginetruria.com
Dear friends and colleagues, I am an Italian free lance biologist, expert in fauna and wildlife. I am an ornithologist as well, and I work as a guide in central Italy with birdwatching groups. In Italy, you can find many places very rich in birds during migration, wintering, and the breeding period. All species which migrate between Europe and Africa cross Italy, and most of them decide to spend few days or whole seasons in the "boot". Visiting our wetlands in winter, walking inside the typical rural landscape or hiking in the mountains of central Italy, it is very easy to discover extraordinary refuges for many species of waterfowls, birds of prey, passerines and so on. In this degree, I can help birders and ornithologists find and enjoy wildlife, along with tasting excellent wines and local products as well. The various locations include Maremma, Valdorcia, the Po Delta, the Apennines and other hidden sites rich in wilderness. Besides guiding birdwatching groups or families for 1-2 days, I can assist in the organization of trips dedicated to birds, suggesting itineraries, and recommending accommodation.
Best regards,
