Dec 31st 2002

Frampton    An adult Yellow-legged Gull on the Sailing Lake and another at the landfill site. Also a Siskin, a Lesser Redpoll, two Ravens and a male and two female Goldeneyes this morning. (MK).

Additional interesting species recorded include a Little Egret, two Kingfishers, a Stonechat, 280 Golden Plovers and 12 Snipe. (Terry Fenton).

Sharpness Docks    A Black Redstart on roof tops by the Post Office in the Dockyard and a Merlin flew up river seen from the picnic site. (Steve Owen).

Highnam Wood    Eight Lesser Redpolls in the upper wood, and good numbers of Marsh Tits, Nuthatches and Great Spotted Woodpeckers from the hide as well as all the commoner species. (MK). 

Walmore Common    74 Bewick's Swans, 37 Shelducks, 200 Wigeon, 250 Teal, 65 Pintail, 12 Shovelers and three adult Yellow-legged Gulls. (Andy Jayne & Mo Croose).

Forest of Dean    A brief round-up of three sites produced a male Goshawk, four Jack Snipe, 24 Snipe, a Dipper, two Ravens, 50 Siskins and 11 Crossbills. (Andy Jayne & Mo Croose).

Dec 27th 2002

Frampton     Three Bewick's Swans on the 100-Acre viewable from the public footpath down Green Lane, also four Ravens, two Water Rails, 364 Lapwings, 12 Golden Plovers, 53 Dunlins and 78 Curlews. Also a Water Rail in the scrub behind the Sailing Lake and two adult winter Yellow-legged Gulls commuting between the Sailing Lake and the Landfill Site. (Martin Wightman). 

Cotswold Water Park (West)    Six Smew (three drakes), seven Goosanders, four Green Sandpipers, a female Stonechat, six Chiffchaffs, plus small numbers of Goldeneye, Ruddy Ducks, Golden Plovers and the partial albino Coot still at Pit 57. (Andy Jayne).

Berkeley Shore    No sign of the Water Pipit today. Two Rock Pipits and two Meadow Pipits south of the Power Station with another Rock Pipit around the Pill to the north of Power Station. Also 12 Turnstones. (Paul Taylor).

Berkeley Shore    A Water Pipit was present this morning for around 15 minutes. It was on its own in a flooded field just north of the football pitch at Berkeley Sports and Social Club. The field is private but can be viewed from the five bar gate. It spent most of it's time perched on wires and calling frequently before flying high south over the top of the power station. Quedgeley    A Jack Snipe has returned to the Clearwater Drive area that was under threat. Also three Common Snipe, two pairs of Bullfinches and a Stonechat. (Andy Chapman)

WWT Slimbridge    A Little Stint, 11 Ruff and an adult Yellow-legged Gull today. Also 500 White-fronted Geese and 100 Bewick's Swans and a Peregrine.

Forest of Dean    Parkend Church : A Hawfinch, three Bramblings, five Siskins, two Ravens and a Sparrowhawk. Speech House : 63 Redwings. Mallard's Pike : 18 Crossbills, a Goshawk, a Raven and five Siskins. (Martin Wightman).

Cirencester    A Great Grey Shrike this afternoon 2-1/2 mls east of Cirencester south of the A417 on hedges by the minor road between Ampney Crucis and Harnhill at SP065007.

Frampton    This morning seven Bewick's Swans were on flashes north of Splatt Bridge (until flushed by a dog walker). A Little Egret commuting between fields either side of the canal here. Also here a female Stonechat, four Ravens and six Bullfinches. On the 100-Acre viewable from the public footpath down Green Lane a female Merlin briefly chasing Skylarks, c500 Lapwings, 75 Golden Plovers, 20+ Dunlins and 60 Curlews. Also a Green Sandpiper heard at Nebrow Hill. (MK).

Cotswold Water Park     Two drake Smew on Pit 75 this morning. A Chiffchaff at the Pit 84/85 complex and a male Lesser Spotted Woodpecker at Fairford football ground. (Duncan Dine).

WWT Slimbridge    Two Little Stints, 10 Ruff and 30 Golden Plovers today. The Pink-footed Goose is still present with 550 White-fronted Geese. Also 180 Bewick's Swans.

Coombe Hill Canal Meadows   The immature Whooper Swan was still present at lunchtime with the Mute Swans. Shoveler and several Teal with the Wigeon, five Dunlins and a Redshank and a female Blackcap behind the wharf. Also Sparrowhawk, Buzzards and several Bullfinches. (David Owen).

Blacklains Farm ( Birdlip)    A covey of at least 25 Red-legged Partridges just south of here at 10.30 this morning. (David Owen).

Forest of Dean   Two Hawfinches and lots of Redwings at Speech House Hotel, a pair of Ravens at Woorgreens and c10 each of Crossbills, Siskins and Redpolls. (Duncan Dine & Ian Ralphs).

Forest of Dean    A Little Bunting at Tidenham Chase today (found last night). The site is 3.5 miles north of Chepstow  at The Park. Park in the Forestry Commission car park on the west side of the B4228 (signed with a brown sign for Offa's Dyke). Follow the obvious footpath east and turn left after a couple of hundred yards just before the white trig point to view scrubby area ST557991. It is loosely associating with c10 Reed Buntings and was still present at 4pm. (MK).

Forest of Dean    A general FoD round-up today produced 13 Little Grebes, a male Goosander, 3 Sparrowhawks, two Dippers (Soudley), 3 Willow Tits, two Ravens, c350 Siskins, c50 Crossbills. Checked several places, but no sign of the Great Grey Shrike. (Andy Jayne).

Coombe Hill Canal Meadows    Egyptian Goose and 7 Whooper Swans (5 adults & 2 juveniles), 20+ Bewick's Swans, hundreds of Wigeon, Pintail and Canada Geese this morning. The Egyptian Goose commutes to Ashleworth with the Canada Goose flock where it was seen yesterday by Colin Butters. It is unringed. (MK). 

Cotswold Water Park    Water Rail, Peregrine, three Goosanders (two males and a female), and two Stonechats at Pit 84/85. A redhead Smew at Pit 42. (Duncan Dine/Steve Owen).

WWT Slimbridge    150 White-fronted Geese and a juvenile Pink-footed Goose from Holden Tower also 2000 Golden Plovers and a Peregrine. A Curlew Sandpiper, 10 Ruff, 18 Snipe, 200 Dunlin and 150 Black-tailed Godwits on South Lake.

Rodley area    7 Golden Plovers, a Jack Snipe, 50 Snipe, four Short-eared Owls and ten Stonechats. (Andy Jayne).

Cotswold Water Park    No sign of the  Bittern in a 3 hour search at the Pit 84/85 complex this morning, but Kingfisher, 50 Golden Plovers and 100 Lapwings over, a Green Sandpiper and a white-headed pale-phase Buzzard masquerading as something rarer. Also a Little Egret on adjacent Pit 79. (MK). 

The Bittern was at pit 84 at dusk this evening when it was disturbed by a helicopter that went over and crashed down right in front of the hide. Also an adult Little Gull near the Sewage Farm, five Goosanders on Pit 34, two Goldeneye and a partial albino Coot on Pit 57. (Andy Jayne & Mo Croose).

Shab Hill, Birdlip    7 Grey Partridges and two Bramblings. (Andy Jayne & Mo Croose).

Frampton    Three White-fronted Geese on foreshore viewable from Splatt Bridge, a Peregrine over flashes N of Splatt Bridge, a Kingfisher and a Stonechat this afternoon. (Martin Wightman).

Forest of Dean    Great Grey Shrike showing well at 3:30pm at Map ref SO639105 about 1 km along track running NNE from Mallards Pike along E side of valley.  The Shrike was near the track at a point 5 minutes walk N of the large clear fell area extending up the hill to the right (E) of the track. (Bill Pool).

Frampton    A Bittern was seen in reedbeds this morning at 10:30am but could not be relocated later despite searching. (Andy Chapman). Three Common Crossbills flew West over the village at around 3pm. (Gordon Hodgson).

It was looked for briefly this afternoon and extensively this evening but not found. 8 Black Terns, 4 Little Egrets,20+ Green Sandpipers, 2 adult Curlew Sandpipers, 3 Greenshanks, 3 Dunlins, 2 Whinchats and 2 Swifts were seen. In the evening a Green Sandpiper was there and 6 Oystercatchers on the river . The female Mandarin with three ducklings still at Splatt Bridge. When I visited during the evening she only had one left, a survey worker from the WWT said she thought Herring Gull predation had occurred. A female Gadwall with 7 duckling on the canal south of Splatt Bridge was a good record. A Spotted Flycatcher on the far side of the canal opposite the yellow fish sign. (MK).

A Black Tern flew down river with 5 Common Terns and disappeared out of sight, plus there were 7 Common Terns on the river off Arlingham. (Gordon Hodgson).

Frampton    A Red Kite between the pools and Nebrow Hill at 6pm lingered for a while before drifting off towards Stroud. Frampton    Female Marsh Harrier flew out of the reedbed north of Splatt Bridge at 8am, circled high over the bridge and flew off south. A real surprise! (MK). Male Garganey on the top flashes north of Splatt Bridge viewed from the canal towpath but only until 6:30am when flushed by dog-toting "birder". 10 Bar-tailed Godwits, 3 Oystercatchers, 10 Dunlin and 7 Curlew at high tide. (MK). Also up to 5 Little Egrets recently, seen on the top flashes north of Splatt Bridge viewed from the canal towpath.

Frampton    A Red Kite between the pools and Nebrow Hill for 20 minutes at 5:30pm. This bird was seen by a villager who rang Gordon Hodgson in London, he rang me and I was able to ring it around. It was seen by Neil Smart from his house heading inland towards Stroud. I missed it. 16 Arctic Terns at Frampton Sailing Lake at 13.00 (none at 8.30, 3 at 10.00 and 5 at 11.00). 18 by 6pm. Awre    John Phillips had a Tawny Pipit at Awre this morning - only the 2nd for Glos. He watched it briefly before it was disturbed by a tractor and flew off high to the North. John puts in a lot of time at Awre so was likely to get a 'mega' sooner or later. (per Andy Jayne).

Cleeve Hill    Cuckoo this morning. 1 or 2 Grasshopper Warblers one of which was in Gorse north of the Radio masts (if you're coming up from the radio masts, head straight past the first main track junction, and then head straight up at the second, there is an area of low Gorse and rank grass between the two tracks. (Ian Ralphs).

Aylburton Warth    A male Yellow Wagtail flew north, a Tree Pipit near the railway and a Swallow through north. A Badger was out and about in broad daylight. At Westbury-on-Severn about 20 Sand Martins were by the Gardens. (MK).

Cleeve Hill    Two males and a female Ring Ouzel feeding on SW facing slopes of the Hill on the field just below a clump of beech trees, 1km NW of masts at dawn. One other flew off north. Also 98 Fieldfare and a Redwing. At Whitehall a pair of Grey Partridges and at West Down a Tree Pipit. On the road between Whitehall and Brockhampton a flock of 12 Corn Buntings on plough. (MK).

Cleeve Hill    6 Ring Ouzels (3 males) flew in at 18:00. Initially in a small tree then on to a quarry where they fed. From masts walk down towards Winchcombe.  They were in the valley leading to the sheep dip in a large quarry high on the left-hand side. (Dave Pearce).

Michael Wood Services M5   Adult Ring-billed Gull at the Services 2mls N of J14 again today. 

Tewkesbury   Adult Ring-billed Gull in a field just north of Tewkesbury by B4080 at SO900339 early afternoon. The Bredons Hardwick Ring-billed Gulls have been seen in Glos at Mitton over the weekend. (per Steve Whitehouse).

Frampton    At the breakwater 98 Common Scoters at high tide, 3 first-winter Little Gulls briefly Also a drake Common Scoter (on the middle of the 3 pools), a Wheatear, a Raven and a Grey Plover. Sailing Lake had a first-winter Common Scoter, 250 Sand Martins and a Swallow. The two odd birds together with the flock bring the total to an unprecedented 100 scoters in the County. (Ian Ralphs).

Frampton    This morning at the shore an adult Kittiwake chased by large gulls at high tide, a Little Egret, a Spotted Redshank, 4 Ruff, an Oystercatcher, drake Common Scoter (on the middle of the 3 pools), a Pochard x Tufted Duck drake hybrid, a pair of Mandarins, a Willow Warbler,  a few Sand Martins and a female Peregrine took a Coot. Also Short-eared Owl, Merlin and Swallow. Frampton    A drake Common Scoter still viewable from the breakwater this morning. Eight Oystercatchers, five Black-tailed Godwits (four on the river and one on the 100 Acre), two Ruff (one on the river and a cracking male with a cream ruff on the 100 Acre) 14 Pintail on the 100 Acre and 4 on the river, a few small groups of Sand Martins through and a Little Egret on the river.

Frampton    No sign of the possible Common Crane by the A38 near the A4071 Frampton turning this morning. The only bird looking remotely like it was a juvenile Grey Heron. At the Sailing Lake 2+ Yellow-legged Gulls and a female Goldeneye. (MK/Colin Martin).

Forest of Dean    No sign of the Great Grey Shrike from New Fancy View or at Staple Edge woods in a four hour search this morning. A Willow Tit and four Mandarins (three males and a female) at Mallards Pike. (MK).

Great Grey Shrike at New Fancy View just NE of Parkend distantly by two dead trees north of the viewpoint again at 3:15pm today. Also 3 Common Crossbill and a Raven from there. A Dipper at Cannop ponds. (Andy Chapman). Well Done Andy, just my luck!

Ashleworth Ham    A single Whooper Swan. (Andy Chapman).
