Dear Sir or Madam,
I
have recently seen a leaflet from the Conservative Party stating that
consideration is being given to the building of houses on open space sites in
Quedgeley, namely Woolstrop Cottage and the area off Clearwater Drive.
I am one of a number of keen birdwatchers in Quedgeley and spend a lot of
time in and around these two open sites, particularly the one at Clearwater
Drive.
These sites regularly hold species of rare and threatened birds, Jack
Snipe, Lesser Whitethroat, Reed Buntings, Bullfinches and Water Rails to name
but a few. It also has a fairly healthy population of breeding House Sparrows,
which are one of the fastest declining birds in Britain. My good friend Andy
Chapman who watches this site daily has counted over 60 species of birds here.
The Jack Snipe and Common Snipe population there in the winter when the area
floods is particularly important.
The area naturally floods in between autumn and spring, which encourages
large amounts of frogs, toads and newts etc. In short, it would be a tragedy to
the wildlife (and the people who enjoy watching it) if these sites were to be
developed for housing.
I hope for the good of the wildlife and the people of Quedgeley that you
do not proceed with these plans. Please leave us some green spaces.
Yours Sincerely,
Your name.
